Lee County Schools and School Choice
Fort Myers-Lee County Florida Schools
Lee County, Florida School system commonly referred to as “School Choice”. The county is comprised of 3 zones”: West, East and South. Each zone has its “subzones”. Upon entering our school system, you choose your 1st, 2nd, 3rd (and so on) school of choice and hope the lottery type system grants your wish for your child. Now, there are some exceptions to the rule. Say you have a child already in one school, and his or her younger sibling is getting ready to enter that grade level. You would receive preferential status. Medical or other familial issues would also be considered exceptions. Each zone has identical schools for certain programs – example: each of the 3 zones has a dedicated IB (International Baccalaureate) high school. The zone’s schools each have something unique to offer. For example; the South Zone has a high school that offers a program where students can study firefighting techniques, while the East zone has a high school with a fully certified Microsoft program.
School Choice was introduced into Lee County many years ago, as a federally mandated step to better integrate our neighborhood schools, and it has worked.
